Note from the editor

Welcome to the ninth issue of Wild Roof Journal

We have collected another batch of new literary and visual art for Issue 9! It’s always rewarding to see the issue come together into a cohesive whole. Of course, these publications wouldn’t be possible without the larger creative community out there, so thank you to those who have submitted work and congratulations for those who have been accepted!

In addition to the issues, one of the aspects of Wild Roof Journal that has been enjoyable is the series of roundtable discussions that has complemented the most recent issues. I like the idea of using these discussions as an opportunity to look back at an issue and take a deeper dive into a few pieces. The current roundtable that is available is an excellent example, covering four stand-outs from the May issue.

I hope that our conversation is interesting for some WRJ readers and contributors. A main part of the appeal for me is that conversations like these are great reminders that creative works come alive when shared with an audience. There’s nothing like a group reading to offer up multiple layers of meaning and bring the nuances of a piece to light.

Thanks again to Shannon, Anna, and Chris for providing such insightful commentary!

Soon enough, I’ll be gathering another group of participants to delve into some of what Issue 9 has to offer. If you have a favorite piece or a question that you’d like us to cover in the next roundtable, please send a message to wildroofjournal@gmail.com.

Until then, enjoy the issue!

Aaron Lelito – Founder and editor in chief

Nathaniel Terrell’s powerful debut collection is made of songs, stories, personal reflection, fiction and scenes of life. Written from the perspective of a passionate, creative black man facing midlife and working hard to share his voice with the world, each poem paints a vivid picture of the soul of an artist.

Touching on topics such as life and death, racism, faith, anger, social injustice, division in the nation, and getting up after failure, Nathaniel Terrell’s Is There Not a Cause? is meant to encourage and to provoke, and will take you on a journey that starts fast and dives deep.

Thank you to our sponsor for Issue 9

Galleries

This issue is arranged into three “galleries,” a concept we’ve borrowed from the art world. Each gallery has a selection of various artwork–both visual and textual. There are some intentional connections between pieces placed next to each other–maybe some unintentional connections as well–and perhaps some points of contrast. Just like a collection in an art gallery, different styles, techniques, and subject matters are brought together, while still keeping enough space around each piece so that each one can be enjoyed fully on its own.

In addition to the gallery links here, there is a list of contributor names below. You may click on any of these names for a direct link to that artist’s work.
