Note from the editor

Welcome to the sixth issue of Wild Roof Journal

Welcome to 2021’s first installment of Wild Roof Journal! This issue completes our first year’s issue cycle, as we have released one every other month since March 2020. Needless to say, it’s been an unexpected ride since the website was launched and the first submissions started coming in. Leaving aside the obvious challenges of the past year or so, I’d like to take a moment to offer a quick acknowledgment. Although this project has been an enriching learning experience for me personally, more importantly, it has connected me to countless others—the amazing contributors who have shared their work, the supporters who greet each issue with excitement, the supporters on Instagram who have found us and offered a like or follow (despite those pesky algorithms that try to bury our posts!), and the helpers who have reviewed many of the submissions and edited much of the text that appear in publication.

The start of 2021 seems to be a good time to take a breath and appreciate the current state of this project, reflect back on the lessons learned from putting these issues out into the world, and renew my dedication to spreading the reach of this publication even further.

As an example of a new direction that is in store for this year, listen in to a roundtable discussion that is part of our podcast series. I had a chance to discuss a few favorite pieces from Wild Roof Journal’s previous issues with Chris Vogt, a professor of English at SUNY Erie Community College, and Adrienne Rozells, a reader who has offered her insights during our submission review process since September. Although we only cover a handful of pieces from past issues, there may very well be more of these discussions coming, so there will be further opportunities to delve into some more of the wonderful poetry, prose, and visual art that appear on the website!

As for the art and writing contained in this issue, I hope you find it entertaining, engaging, and inspirational!

Galleries

This issue is arranged into three “galleries,” a concept we’ve borrowed from the art world. Each gallery has a selection of various artwork–both visual and textual. There are some intentional connections between pieces placed next to each other–maybe some unintentional connections as well–and perhaps some points of contrast. Just like a collection in an art gallery, different styles, techniques, and subject matters are brought together, while still keeping enough space around each piece so that each one can be enjoyed fully on its own.

In addition to the gallery links here, there is a list of contributor names below. You may click on any of these names for a direct link to that artist’s work.
