Welcome to the third issue of Wild Roof Journal

Welcome to the third issue of Wild Roof Journal! First, we’d like to thank everyone who took the time to submit their work. Although this issue contains a fraction of the work submitted to us, we acknowledge that we could not put these issues together without our contributors—both those who appear in the issue and those whose work was not selected at this time.

As I introduce the third issue, I am excited to add a whole new batch of writers and artists into the Wild Roof community. Some of the most gratifying messages I receive are those from contributors who have encountered a new audience since their work has appeared in Wild Roof Journal. In the attention economy that we’re a part of, it can certainly be challenging for artists to get engaged with the people that appreciate their work. A central part of my mission for this publication is to help, in some small way, these creative endeavors connect with a larger audience.

I hope you take the time to look over the work of our excellent contributors. And don’t hesitate to reach out to your favorites—a quick message really means a lot!

I’d also like to highlight the artist interview feature in this issue—Sara Baker Michalak. She is an artist from Western New York who has a deep connection to her natural surroundings. This one certainly matches the artist features of the previous two issues, and I recommend it as a great starting point for any newcomers to Wild Roof Journal.

Lastly, I will add a note about an adjacent project, a new art & lit website called The Closed Eye Open (theclosedeyeopen.com). The tagline of the website is “an exploration of consciousness.” It’s a bit more of a specialized focus than Wild Roof, but I’m sure some of our readers would find it intriguing. Their first issue was just released for the summer solstice, and I’m pleased to mention that a few Wild Roof contributors have made the cut for this new publication: Samantha Malay, Hannah Mathis, Hayden Moore, and Michael Marschner. Congrats to all of those selected for the inaugural issue!

I hope you enjoy Issue 3!

Galleries

This issue is arranged into three “galleries,” a concept we’ve borrowed from the art world. Each gallery has a selection of various artwork–both visual and textual. There are some intentional connections between pieces placed next to each other–maybe some unintentional connections as well–and perhaps some points of contrast. Just like a collection in an art gallery, different styles, techniques, and subject matters are brought together, while still keeping enough space around each piece so that each one can be enjoyed fully on its own.

(It should be noted that the best viewing experience is on a computer or tablet… smaller mobile devices–while a necessity at times–may not represent the artists’ work as well.)

In addition to the gallery links here, there is a list of contributor names below. You may click on any of these names for a direct link to that artist’s work.
